I'll be interested to see what you found in your research, Robert. The "best decade" is pretty subjective. May have a lot to do with the age of the responder. ;)

Having gone from Alabama to Iowa I can see the difference in Technology. Don't want to get into the specifics, but the lack of high speed Internet and the lack of choices for providers exists in Iowa.

I grew up in the 50's. I miss the innocence from that time. Kids didn't grow up so fast back then. It was rare to hear about shootings even back 20 years ago.

I listen to older music from the 60's 70's and 80's, I dont like the weird funky techno stuff today. But what annoys me is how ignorant my generation is. Kids these days wont listen to anything older than a couple years ago and ive had friends think im crazy for listening to the older music. It seams people always want the newest thing and that they can never settle for the old classics.

Bingo! Robert! That's what is wrong with now, people not slowing down long enough to take in the view. I have high speed internet through my phone company, if you what technology look no further than our own world respected University of Iowa. I have allowed myself with othere to always want faster and smarter things. But I have always got time for my Motown! Ricky Nelson, Elvis, Beach Boys, Fabian, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Vee, just to name a few, Roy Orbison, etc. Memories sweet memories of a life much easier! Patty

I've completed the poll. Hope this helps you with your research. I think growing up in the late 50's, mid 60's was great for forming my values. But the late 70's and 80's were the best because I (along with my wife and lifetime best friend) had the privilige of parenting two wonderful children.

You know Robert as one of the youngest members we have on the site, you are one of the brightest! You seem to have a very mature way of figuring things out. I think the part where you bring up 911 and say we all move a little faster since then, you hit it on the nail, I have noticed it with the youth the most. Getting ahead first, being first, having the most and the best. Instead of giving just any old car to you kid, nowadays you can
see the kid driving a car just as nice as mom and dad's. I do blame our generation and the one following, we wanted better for our kids, never wanting for them to want. I wore faded hand me downs, my one pair of shoes had to last the whole school year. We took our lunch to school to save money (now they take their lunch so they can eat what the school won't feed them). Kids are reflection of the parents, I for one proudly say when asked about my kids, I tell them of their success, like my daughter is a manager of a credit union, and my son builds houses and raises cattle. Yes Robert the 911 thing has changed things but our generation gave it a head start.

See, I know some parents who are very overprotective. My friend's mother wont let her daughter get her lisence until she's 20!..Really! It seams like some parents are getting a little over protective and a little over concerned (Not my parents! theyre awesome) and then the kids start burring themselves in electronics. Texting all night and stuff like that. I stayed at my cousins cottage for a night when he was 9 and we were in the same room because there are 2 beds. and he texted until 4am!!!!!! I couldnt sleep because i kept hearing that annoying clicky noise and the glow of the cellphone light!. I do text but only for stuff like seeing when my friends can comeover and communicating with family out of province. I cant stand texting for more than 3 minutes. Drives me insane...And you will never catch me EVER texting in public. I just dont like it... Anyways, I wouldnt say your generation is to blame. My generation and your generation are almost alike. Your generation took time in learning technology at a slower more easy pace. First Computers worked their way into peoples lives and so did cell phones. They just eased in. Now my generation has all that technology but they keep searching for more. So of course buisness people are going to make a buck of of it so because there is a massave demand for the newest electronics they keep turning out the electronics.

Ex.
1.They invent the Ipad with all the features..Camera,Voice recorder, hollagrams and stuff
2. They only include one of them when they first release it. People buy it cuz its new
3. They come out with a new Camera I pad. Its new...People buy it
4. They Come out with a voice recorder i pad..its new..people buy it
5. They come out with a hollagram i pad..again its new people buy it.

There...i know many people who do stuff like this. Same thing with the Iphones..what are they up to 5 now?. lol. But if they put all the technology in one..people would buy one. vs. buying a new one with the "stunning" new addition a few times a year.

Texting until 4 a.m. is insane. I don't text much. When I do it is brief, but I find that it is less intrusive than a phone call when you are out in public.

They keep coming out with new stuff because there are people who have to have the newest of everything. I like to have my means of communication when I am away from home. We get so much more done that way instead of waiting for the snail mail.

If it were up to me, I would out law all cell phones and texting while driving. I jokingly said they should use the empty lots around town for cell phone users and those that just have to text. We have plenty of lots because four years ago Cedar Rapids was hit with a flood of the century, so we have quite a few empty lots since the houses were torn down,

Here in America the people think it's their right to text and use cell phones while driving, and for gosh sakes we don't want to mess with their rights, but where are my rights? So many mistakes made by drivers while speeding along and texting and talking on a darn cell phone. How did we ever exist without being in touch with the world every second of a day? There are no surprises that's for sure, we even know when someone is going to have a baby nowadays before they leave the bedroom. (A joke!) An example !

I think the excessive cell phone radio waves are altering peoples minds  LOL  i just think people need to say..What would i do without cell phones..what would i do without social media..
Some people are constantly on facebook, I think facebook is EVIL!!! ive always thought that..it is evil! Its degrading social skills. Back in the 20th century people had to deal with annoying people and put up with it. This built somewhat of a tolerance towards others. Now days anybody you dont like you just block out. People online shop at christmas not only because its cheaper but because you avoid crowds of people. This tolerance helped people deal with life. Now people just block it out. You see this everywhere. Facebook, Twitter and Even here on jgn. We've heard all about ignore buttons. Chances are if the ignore features everywhere didnt exist people would either tolerate others better or work it out personally.
